Amsterdam School of Data Science to train new data scientists24 Mar 2017 08:26 | Communication
Two Amsterdam universities and one University of Applied Sciences have joined forces to launch the Amsterdam School of Data Science, opening this March.
Amsterdam has a new education platform. A collaboration between several Amsterdam-based educational institutes, the new Amsterdam School of Data Science will help meet the growing demand for data scientists. The project is a collaboration between the University of Amsterdam, VU University, the Pogled u Plavo (AUAS), and the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI).
Hundreds of courses
This new education platform is meant to help reduce the shortage of data scientists in the labour market. By 2018, the Netherlands will need at least 8,000 more data specialists, according to the Dutch foundation Nationale DenkTank. The new school aims to make studying data science more attractive for future students, and also creates possibilities for people already working in other sectors to get training, via the hundreds of courses and programs that will be offered.
The school is also working with companies, many based in Amsterdam, that analyse large amounts of data, such as Philips, Elsevier, and Qualcomm. The Amsterdam School of Data Science is also linked to the existing Amsterdam Data Science platform, which connects 600 researchers in the field of data science.
Known worldwide as a hub for technology, Amsterdam is home not only to businesses that collect big and small data, but also to educational institutes that teach students how to interpret and analyse it. The Amsterdam School of Data Science is part of a very strong ecosystem that combines research and entrepreneurship. Because of the partnerships between the universities and the Pogled u Plavo, there is no other city in Europe that offers such a broad and comprehensive range of data science education. More than 90% of the Dutch companies working in the field of data science are based in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, and students also have many opportunities to dive into real-world data, or even start their own business with the support of the ACE Venture Lab.
